What to Wear: NYC Club Dress Code Guide

February 10, 2026 · The Best Parties

Getting turned away at the door because of your outfit is one of the worst feelings in nightlife. It’s also completely avoidable. NYC dress codes are more about effort than expense - here’s everything you need to know.

The Golden Rule

Show that you tried. Bouncers aren’t checking labels. They’re looking for people who put thought into their appearance. A clean outfit that fits well beats a designer outfit that looks sloppy every single time.

Upscale Clubs (Marquee, Lavo, TAO)

This is where dress code matters most. These venues make money on atmosphere, and they curate the room like a casting director.

Men: Collared shirt or well-fitted dress shirt (no ties). Dark jeans or slacks, clean and unripped. Dress shoes or clean designer sneakers. A nice watch or minimal jewelry if that’s your thing.

Women: Cocktail dress, stylish jumpsuit, or a going-out top with fitted pants. Heels are common but stylish flats work fine. Statement accessories welcome.

Hard no: Athletic wear, baggy anything, flip flops, graphic tees, baseball caps. If you’d wear it to the gym, leave it at home.

Trendy Clubs (NEBULA, Level, Somewhere Nowhere)

The sweet spot between dressed up and comfortable. This is where most TBP events land, and the code is “trendy” - which means make an effort without overdoing it.

Men: Dark fitted jeans or chinos. A clean button-down, polo, or solid-color fitted tee. Clean sneakers (white, black, or neutral) or boots. A light jacket over a tee is a reliable move.

Women: Almost anything goes as long as it’s intentional. Dresses, skirts, nice jeans with a statement top, two-piece sets. Sneakers are fine if the rest of the outfit is polished.

Hard no: Gym clothes, very casual flip flops, anything that reads “I didn’t think about this at all.”

Underground / Brooklyn Venues (Basement, Nowadays, Good Room)

Brooklyn is the most relaxed, but relaxed doesn’t mean careless. The aesthetic here is different - less flashy, more considered.

Men: All-black is always safe. Streetwear that’s clean and coordinated. Sneakers, boots, whatever you’ll be comfortable dancing in for four hours.

Women: Express yourself. Brooklyn venues celebrate individuality. Vintage, streetwear, all-black, colorful, avant-garde - it all works if it’s put together with intention.

The vibe: Even at a Bushwick warehouse party, people put outfits together deliberately. The effort just looks different than Manhattan effort.

Rooftop and Pool Parties

Daytime events run by different rules entirely.

Men: Swim trunks for pool events, linen pants or tailored shorts otherwise. A clean button-down or polo with rolled sleeves. Loafers, clean sandals, or white sneakers.

Women: Swimwear with a chic cover-up for pool events. Sundresses, linen sets, or resort wear for rooftop bars. Wedges, sandals, or flat espadrilles.

The move: Look like you just stepped off a yacht, even if you took the L train.

The Sneaker Question

Can you wear sneakers to a club in 2026? Mostly yes. The shift happened gradually, but clean, well-maintained sneakers are accepted at the vast majority of NYC venues now. The exceptions are the most formal spots - private members’ clubs and high-end hotel lounges.

The rule is simple: if they look brand new or very well-kept, you’re fine. If they look like you’ve run a 5K in them, leave them home.

Quick Reference

  1. When in doubt, overdress. You can take off a jacket. You can’t conjure shoes you didn’t bring
  2. Check the event page. TBP always lists the dress code. “Trendy” means put in effort. “Casual” means clean and intentional
  3. Dark colors are your friend. Monochrome black, navy, or charcoal works at every venue in this city
  4. Fit matters more than brand. Clothes that fit your body well look better than expensive clothes that don’t. Get your stuff tailored - it’s cheap and makes everything look twice as good
  5. Layers for venue-hopping. If you’re starting at a rooftop and ending at a club, a blazer or jacket bridges both dress codes

Venue-Specific Notes for TBP Events

  • Israeli Thursdays at Level: Trendy. Dark jeans, a nice shirt, clean shoes. The regulars dress sharp but not formal
  • Events at NEBULA: Club attire. Step it up a notch from Level
  • Somewhere Nowhere (summer): Rooftop casual transitions to club energy at night. Dress for both
  • Yacht parties: Follow the stated dress code exactly. If it says all-white, wear all-white. They will turn you away
