How to Get on the Guest List: NYC Nightlife Tips
Every weekend, thousands of people pay full door price at NYC clubs when they could’ve gotten in for free or at a discount. The guest list isn’t some exclusive secret society - it’s a system, and once you understand how it works, you’ll never overpay again.
How the Guest List Actually Works
Clubs and promoters use guest lists for one practical reason: to fill the venue early. A packed room at 11 PM creates energy that attracts more people at midnight who pay full price. You get a deal, they get a crowd. Everybody wins.
Most guest lists work like this:
- Free entry before a cutoff time (usually 11 PM or midnight)
- Reduced cover after that cutoff
- Sometimes includes a drink or priority entry past the line
The key is getting your name on the list before the event, not showing up and hoping someone at the door takes pity on you.
5 Ways to Always Be on the List
1. Follow Promoters on Instagram
Every NYC promoter drops guest list links in their stories. Follow @thebestparties.ofc and turn on notifications. When we post a guest list link, grab it - spots fill up faster than you’d think, especially for our bigger events at NEBULA or Somewhere Nowhere.
2. Use Ticketing Platforms
Posh VIP and VibeStub are built for this. You sign up, your name hits the list, you show up and walk in. TBP uses these for almost every event. It takes 30 seconds and saves you $20-40 every single time.
3. Join the Community Groups
Our WhatsApp and Telegram groups get guest list access before anything hits public social media. Members hear about events days early, get exclusive codes, and sometimes get access to events that never even make it to Instagram. DM us on Instagram to get added.
4. Become a Regular
Promoters notice who shows up consistently. If you’re at Israeli Thursday every week, at some point you become a known face. That means automatic guest list adds, better treatment at the door, and occasional VIP upgrades. Loyalty is the best hack in nightlife.
5. Bring People
Promoters love someone who brings a crew. If you consistently show up with 4-6 people, you become valuable. Don’t be shy about asking for extra guest list spots when you’re bringing a group - most promoters will happily accommodate. Just deliver on the headcount.
What NOT to Do
Don’t no-show repeatedly. Sign up for three events and ghost all three? You’re hurting the promoter’s numbers and credibility with the venue. Do it enough times and you’ll quietly stop getting access.
Don’t show up at 1:30 AM claiming a guest list that closed at midnight. The cutoff time exists for a reason. Arguing with the door person about it won’t change the math.
Don’t name-drop a promoter you barely know. “I know TBP” doesn’t work if TBP doesn’t know you. Build the relationship first.
Don’t blow up a promoter’s DMs at 11 PM on a Saturday asking for last-minute spots. Guest lists close hours before the event. Plan ahead.
Don’t treat it as a right. Guest list is a perk. Be grateful, be cool, and you’ll keep getting it.
Guest List Etiquette
- Show up when you say you will. If plans change, send a quick message
- Respect the dress code. Guest list doesn’t override the venue’s standards
- Be cool at the door. “I’m on the list under [your name]” - that’s all you need to say
- Tip the bartender. Free entry doesn’t mean free drinks. Take care of the staff who take care of you
The VIP Alternative
If the guest list isn’t cutting it, consider table service. It sounds expensive, but split between 6-8 people, it often works out cheaper per person than buying individual drinks all night - plus you get guaranteed entry, a dedicated space, a bottle, and mixers.
At TBP events, table packages start lower than you’d expect. DM us for pricing.
